OpenLaw

Learning How to Interact with Templates

Topic: Legal Agreement Platforms

LBA [5]

We are glad to announce our next LegalBlock Activity LBA[5] in collaboration with OpenLaw

OpenLaw is building a technology stack to help power next-generation “smart” legal agreements. LegalBlock is working on shaping the new generation of Legal Practitioners. The synergy could not be more obvious.

“It is now possible to model all or parts of legal agreements using code (smart contracts), decreasing the cost and friction of creating, securing, and generating binding legal agreements.” OpenLaw

Activity Structure and Calendar

Present OpenLaw to LegalBlock members. Test collaboration activity

Goal: The use of OpenLaw platform to record a Private Agreement for LegalBlock proposals as a use case. LegalBlock community act as testers.

Step 1

Preparation: Sept 25th. – Oct 4th, 2018

During the prep stage, we share all the relevant information about Openlaw for the community to analyze, discuss and formulate questions. All relevant content and documentation are provided by OpenLaw. During this stage, we use the LBA[5] “Master Document” as a guidance document, plus the material posted in our dedicated channel #legal-agreement-platforms in Slack.
There is a link to submit the questions for the Q&A session at the bottom of the Master Document. The questions will be answered during the presentation (Q&A session). Those questions submitted in advance have priority over the questions on the chat during the live session.
The channel #legal-agreement-platforms in Slack is the place to discuss and leave comments on this activity. Any unanswered question or doubt not clarified that have been discussed in Slack will be added to the questions form by the Catalysts.

Step 2

2.1. Q&A session: Oct 4th, 2018

3.00 pm UTC

Q&A with Kirsten Albers-Fiedler and Michael Rice, Legal Engineers for OpenLaw at Consensys.

They will give us an overview of the platform followed by the Q&A. Doing the homework during the preparation period is essential. This session requires a basic understanding of the Legal Agreement platform.

2.2. Drafting and Template. Oct 4th to Oct 11th, 2018

During the following week, LegalBlock members will work together on drafting the template to be uploaded to OpenLaw platform. It is recommended forming a Working Group for this purpose. Those Lawyers interested in the topic of Legal Agreement Platforms have here a unique opportunity to get into the experience. The Slack channel is open for discussion and collaboration on this matter. The Catalysts can assist to coordinate the information and help at any stage of the process. The document produced during this stage is the template we will upload and use during the next session: a live demo.

For purposes of this activity, OpenLaw is opening a private instance to keep our organization templates and contracts shielded from other users.

2.3. Live Demo: Oct 12th, 2018

3.00 pm UTC

During this real-time demo via LegalBlock zoom, OpenLaw engineers will demonstrate how to interact with the platform. They will use the template submitted by the LegalBlock community (see 2.2). The chat will be open to posting your questions.

Step 3

Outcome: Oct 12th to Nov 15th, 2018 (estimate)

The outcome of this activity is getting the Proposals Private Agreement uploaded on the Rinkeby testnet.

During the activity, we will learn how to use the platform. Later on, we can evaluate the use of the Legal Agreement Platform for integration in LegalBlock Proposals System. As a starting point, the Proposals System can be backed on-chain by a private agreement between the parties, i.e. between LegalBlock Accredited Lawyers forming Working Groups for each Proposal. We have briefly mentioned the concept of LegalBlock Proposals System before (refer to the latest post “Why LegalBlock Needs Accredited Lawyers”). It will be elaborated in a further stage for discussion and feedback.

Collaboration

This LegalBlock Activity is designed in collaboration with the OpenLaw team. We have a dedicated team of Legal Engineers for us courtesy of OpenLaw during this process. It is paramount to move forward and bring our knowledge to the next level. Now, we have the opportunity to experience one on one guidance, working with peers, interacting with the blockchain to become early adopters. This activity is possible due to the efforts of the LegalBlock Catalysts and the OpenLaw team.

Openlaw and LegalBlock share the same underlying philosophy. We believe that times are changing for the Legal Community. While we at LegalBlock are working on creating a decentralized Legal Community based on Collective Wisdom for the times to come, OpenLaw is working on changing how the legal agreements work. The synergy could not be more obvious.
